Mission Statement
The Mildred V Horn Foundation ("Horn Foundation") mission is focused in the following three areas: (1) public charities that support historic home restoration (circa 1760 to 1860) that are open to the public and are located in Kentucky and its contiguous states; (2) education (primarily schools including elementary, middle and high school and colleges located in Oldham county, Kentucky and the surrounding area), and (3) homeless shelters located in Oldham county, Kentucky and the surrounding area.
Grant Application Guidelines
Grant seeking organizations must meet the following criteria to be eligible for support from the Horn Foundation: (1) have a current exemption letter noting your 501(c)(3) tax exempt status AND your public charity status as described in section 509(a)(1)or 509(a)(2). Public charities with 509 (a) (3) status should contact us before submitting a request, and (2) be located in Kentucky (excepting historic homes which must be located in Kentucky and its contiguous states).

Grant requests are accepted throughout the calendar year, although funds available for grant making may be depleted before year-end. Generally, grants are awarded for the current year and requests for multi-year funding are not be considered. If a grant seeker has received a substantial grant, the foundation will normally not consider that organization for an additional grant in the proceeding year. The Horn Foundation does not make individual or endowment grants and grant making decisions are final.
Additional Information for Grant Seekers

Our grants normally range between $1,000 and $10,000 per grant. Grants exceeding $10,000 are awarded less frequently and typically require a greater level of commitment i.e. a written grant contract detailing required reports, records, timelines, etc.

We encourage grant seekers to apply for a grant to the Horn Foundation online using the Online Common Grant Application at the Center for Nonprofit Excellence. Alternatively, a grant seeker may submit a one or two page letter describing the organization and its program and/or need. We require (1) a copy of the grant seeker's IRS exemption letter, (2) a letter signed by an authorized person stating that the organization's public charitable status is in full force and effect, (3) a description of the organization's legal status, i.e. corporation, trust, private or public charity, and (4) a statement of how the community will benefit from the program.

In general, the Horn Foundation does not consider proposals for funding in the following areas: fellowships or other individual development projects; personal businesses; operating support for traditional community services; reduction or elimination of deficits; computer projects; films, TV or radio productions; book publications; projects that are located or support activities outside the continental USA; direct services or training programs (e.g. counseling programs, medical services, job training, referral services); litigation; government sponsored or controlled projects; sporting events; endowment fund drives; non-scholastic educational programs; and churches.

While we do not currently publish an annual report, we do file an annual 990-PF (Return of Private Foundation) with the Internal Revenue Service. You may obtain a copy via the internet at www.guidestar.org (registration is required but free) or by sending a request letter to us with a self-addressed, stamped envelope. The Horn Foundation is a 501(c)(3) private non-operating foundation.
