Building on Last Year

Breaking boundaries for breakthrough results is the driving theme for this year’s Center for Nonprofit Excellence nonprofit leadership conference. What does that mean?

Consider the fact that Louisville and Lexington mayors now envision a super region for collaboration to build on our competitive advantages. Isn’t that breaking boundaries? Think about the seemingly radical partnership between EDGE Outreach and the Louisville Water Company. Though a logical connection exists between the two, it took new imagination to envision bringing them together. Look at the vast array of partnerships embraced by the Louisville Waterfront Corporation and the resulting metamorphic change to our city’s front lawn.

The way forward, it seems clear, is in connecting our strengths and assets in very different ways – not just between nonprofit organizations, though that is a huge piece of it, but between all three sectors. That is at the heart of this year’s conference.

Last year, the conference built upon the Louisville region’s collective dream, forged by over 160 area leaders working with Dr. Lance Secretan, to become the idea capitol of the world, where imaginations and all individuals thrive. We believe that dream speaks to all of us, none more powerfully than to the nonprofit sector.

This year’s conference transitions from inspiration to defining the broad elements of a plan.

People Talking

How we define and make tangible the dream? “Every individual thrives” requires, at a minimum, good health and an enriching education. That’s why we have adopted the community’s deep-driving goals of achieving 55,000 new college degrees by the end of the decade and improving our health and well-being to be the outcomes that will beckon our inspired, innovative and collaborative work.

While dramatically reshaping how we inspire and support higher levels of education and health are the content goals, the methods to reach them must embrace innovation and collaboration.

The Pyramid Awards of Excellence will be presented during the luncheon in the following categories:

Art of Collaboration, sponsored by Deming Malone Livesay & Ostroff (DMLO)
Art of Diversity, sponsored by Fifth Third Bank
Art of Governance, sponsored by Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs, LLP
Art of Leadership, sponsored by Dean Dorton Allen Ford, PLLC
Art of Social Innovation, sponsored by Dick & Ardi Wilson
Art of Vision, sponsored by Mountjoy Chilton Medley, LLP

David Graves, recently retired President of Brooklawn Child & Family Services, and Christine Johnson, President & CEO of Leadership Louisville Center who is retiring at the end of 2011, are the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award recipients. David led Brooklawn’s transformation into the state’s first psychiatric residential facility in 2000. It is now recognized as one of the best treatment facilities of its type in the US. Christine has led the Leadership Louisville Center to ever-higher levels of success during her 21-year tenure.  A Business First editorial in 2009 stated: “Leadership Louisville is considered one of the best leadership-development and civic-engagement organizations in the country.  Under the skilled direction of president Chris Johnson, the organization is known for recreating itself to better fulfill its mission.”

Dawne Gee will serve as mistress of ceremonies and Mayor Greg Fischer will share his insights on community change with the luncheon keynote. Many of Mayor Fischer’s administration’s goals are very much part of the nonprofit sector’s work and directly relate to Breaking Boundaries for Breakthrough Results.
