Register for 2012 Get On Board Series Today
Get on Board is one of the Center for Nonprofit Excellence’s (CNPE) Signature programs. This four-session seminar series is focused on broadening age, gender, and racial diversity on local nonprofit boards. Get on Board fulfills community needs in two ways. First, it engages and equips current and next generation leaders with the knowledge they need to provide strong leadership to nonprofit boards. Second, Get on Board offers local nonprofits an opportunity to connect with leaders who want to share their passion and talent.
Program participants gain an understanding of community organizations, how to strengthen public trust, and critical information about the responsibilities of board members. The learning experience is designed to meet the needs of adult learners, featuring real-world case studies, subject matter expert speakers, and opportunities for discussion and hands-on problem solving. In addition, participants are also connected with local nonprofits that are seeking new leaders through roundtable discussions.
The series is supported by a cadre of local leadership organizations including, the Better Business Bureau, Fund for the Arts, Junior League of Louisville, Leadership Louisville, Legal Aid Society, Louisville Urban League, and Metro United Way.

- Board Basics & Finding Your Passion, April 18, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. to Noon - Brown Theatre Fifth Third Conference Room
Begin your quest to serve greater Louisville through volunteer leadership as a board member! In the first of the four-session Get on Board series, you will learn about the scope and nature of public purpose organizations, what to expect and bring to the table through your serving on a board of directors, and the importance of linking your passion to your volunteer leadership experience. We’ll examine the model of effective boards as an example of high functioning teams that perform best when they organize with trust, accountability, diversity, and clear roles and responsibilities. - Stewards of Public Trust, April 25, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. to Noon - Community Room of Metro United Way
When you accept the mantle of board membership, the community trusts that you will guide the organization toward its mission success. In this session, you’ll learn the behaviors you and your fellow board members must employ to make that happen. We will highlight the differences between governance and management, and explore the fiduciary responsibilities of board membership. Becky Phillips, Vice‐chair of Mountjoy Chilton Medley’s Audit Services Department and Chair of the firm’s Not‐for‐Profit Services Team, will present on the fiduciary responsibilities of a board at the April 25 session.

A high-performance nonprofit board envisions and creates a bold, successful future with its commitment to values, spirit of optimism, and a pledge to meet the changing demands of the community it serves. In this session, you’ll learn what methods work best to achieve this kind of board performance. This session culminates in roundtable discussions where you will have the opportunity to meet and converse with executive directors and board members from nonprofits who are seeking new board participants. Agencies represented are selected for participation based on alignment with your interests. - Promises to Keep, May 16, 2012 from 8:30 a.m. to Noon - Brown Theatre Fifth Third Conference Room
A board member’s pledge to lead and serve finds its meaning not only in the domain of strategy and fiscal oversight, but also within the traditions of a legal agreement with the community, the board, and all other stakeholders. At our final session, we’ll review the obligations implicit in responsible board governance and celebrate your successful completion of this learning experience. - Former Kentucky State Auditor, Crit Luallen will share her insights and best practices about proper board governance at the May 16 session. Mrs. Luallen was elected Kentucky’s Auditor of Public Accounts in November of 2003 and re-elected in 2007. She served nearly seven years as Secretary of the Governor’s Executive Cabinet, then the highest appointed position in Kentucky state government. Previous appointments include State Budget Director, Secretary of Finance, Secretary of Tourism, and Commissioner of the Department of the Arts. She also spent four years in Louisville and served as President of the Greater Louisville Economic Development Partnership, a regional economic development agency. In 2001 Luallen was awarded the National Excellence in Leadership Award by Women Executives in State Government and in 2009 she was named Public Official of the Year by Washington, D.C.-based magazine “Governing” for her positive impact on government in Kentucky.
