Community Opportunity to Facilitate Change –
Help identify the Leadership Louisville Center’s 2010 Bingham Fellows Topic

The Bingham Fellows program is one of four core programs offered by the Leadership Louisville Center and for the first time in years, the topic for the 2010 Class will be identified by the community. For 20 years, Bingham Fellows have worked with community partners to provide creative and innovative solutions to and raise awareness of some of the region’s most pressing problems and challenges. Citizens can submit ideas for the work of the Bingham Fellows until June 22 by visiting www.leadershiplouisville.org. The Bingham Fellows program offers an opportunity for us to bring the people and ideas together to create change – don’t miss the chance to give your thoughts on where change is needed!

What makes a successful Bingham Fellows topic?

􀂃 Importance – is the challenge of importance to the community?
􀂃 Urgency – is action, or are solutions, needed now or can it be delayed?
􀂃 Necessity – will other organizations carry the responsibility once the program year concludes?
􀂃 Cost-benefit – is the estimated impact of project team work worth the amount of time required? Are the projects/ initiatives of manageable size for the program year?
􀂃 Effectiveness – how likely is it that ideas generated from the Bingham Fellows will receive serious consideration and/or that recommendations made will be implemented?
􀂃 Definition – is the challenge adequately defined in order to provide direction to the Bingham Fellows?
􀂃 Emotion/ Politics – is the challenge capable of being resolved by reason based on fact or are the emotional/political overtones too large to permit reasoned analysis?
􀂃 Creativity/Innovation – will Bingham Fellows have the freedom to complete their work by tapping into creative solutions brought about by their innovative thinking?

About the Bingham Fellows
The Bingham Fellows program was created in 1988 through a $500,000 endowment from the Mary and Barry Bingham Sr. Fund. The participants are social entrepreneurs that have both a vision and the ability to assemble the resources required to implement that vision to address obvious social needs. Over the years, the Bingham Fellows have addressed the issue of affordable housing resulting in the creation of The Housing Partnership, established a Waste Management Board in Jefferson County, marshaled the resources to build a new facility for the Presbyterian Community Center in Smoketown, formed the Regional Leadership Coalition, created a new model of leadership in our community with IDEAL Louisville, and focused on building regional relationships to allow Louisville to think and act regionally. The 2009 Bingham Fellows are working to create a region that young professionals not only come to but stay.
Bingham Fellows classes are comprised of graduates of other Leadership Louisville Center programs resulting in a broad cross-section of industry, age and geographical representation. The class size is typically 30-40 participants. At the start of the program year, Bingham Fellows are provided with an objective and recommended outcomes to address the community challenge. Putting their advanced leadership skills into action, participants work in small groups to further explore the topic and implement solutions. This process is peer-led and activities are peer-executed. Leadership Louisville Center staff members facilitate the experience and each program year runs February – August and their work culminates in September.
