Leadership Louisville Center Announces Eight Nonprofits Selected by Ignite Louisville Teams for 2010 Make Your Mark Challenge

The Leadership Louisville Center’s Ignite Louisville program kicked off the 2010 Make Your Mark Challenge, the service learning component of the program for emerging leaders. Proposals were received from nearly 30 area nonprofits and eight were chosen by the Ignite Louisville teams as their projects for the challenge.

The nonprofits selected for the challenge include: Carriage House Educational Services and Preschool; Children Have Options In Choosing Experiences, Inc.; GuardiaCare Services, Inc.; Louisville Science Center; Passionate About Kids; Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kentuckiana; The Steward’s Staff; and Visually Impaired Preschool Services. The challenge, recipient of the 2009 Pyramid Award for Excellence in the Art of Collaboration, pairs Ignite Louisville teams with Louisville area nonprofits to plan, execute and sustain new strategies for success. In return, Ignite Louisville participants gain experience in community leadership, board involvement and teamwork.

The 2009 class directly invested about 1200 hours in their Challenge agency, averaging 150 hours per team. Generally, over 50% of Ignite Louisville participants continue their involvement with their agency and 30% go on to serve on their agency’s board. Most nonprofit agencies involved in the Challenge indicate they wouldn’t have been successful with their project without the participation of their Ignite Louisville project team. One agency estimated the value of their project work at $15,000.

Ignite Louisville is a six-month program that grows young professionals by developing the key components of leadership: skills, networking, community understanding and engagement. In addition to the program’s core curriculum, the participants take on a project proposed by a local nonprofit to gain hands-on experience performing on a team and serving the community.

Ignite Louisville is presented by Norton Healthcare. Program partners include the Young Professionals Association of Louisville (YPAL) and the Louisville Urban League Young Professionals (LULYP).
