100 Activists from Kentucky to attend national gathering in Detroit, Michigan June 22to 26

Louisville, June 9 –Kentucky Jobs with Justice will be joining more than 10 other social justice organizations on two charter buses to Detroit to take part in the US Social Forum.  Here is a snippet from the USSF Web site: http://www.ussf2010.org/

The US Social Forum (USSF) is a movement building process. It is not a conference but it is a space to come up with the peoples’ solutions to the economic and ecological crisis. The USSF   is the next most important step in our struggle to build a powerful multi-racial, multi-sector, inter-generational, diverse, inclusive, internationalist movement that transforms this country and changes history.

The USSF provides spaces to learn from each other’s experiences and struggles, share our analysis of the problems our communities face, build relationships, and align with our international brothers and sisters to strategize how to reclaim our world.

The first US Social Forum was held in Atlanta in 2007 with KY JwJ taking over 40 delegates.  KY JwJ hosted the first Kentucky Social Forum in 2009 at Berea College, which drew over 400 participants.  These Forums were and are inspired by the World Social Forum, an annual event since 2000 that will be in Dakar, Senegal in 2011.

The 2010 US Social Forum expects 25,000-plus participants.  The following groups will be represented traveling with KY JwJ: University of Louisville Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research, Kentucky Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (Louisville, Ky.)

Kentuckians For The Commonwealth (London, Ky.), Alliance for Appalachia (Charleston,W. Va.) Bluegrass Domestic Violence Program (Lexington, Ky.),Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards (Big Stone Gap, Va.), Mountain Justice (Naoma, W. Va.), Statewide Organizing for Community eMpowerment (Lake City, Tenn.), Central District Organizing Project (Gary, Ind.), The Healing Place (Louisville, Ky.), and Buddhist Peace Fellowship (based out of Berkeley, Calif.).

The community organizers to attend work on a variety of issues and believe in the USSF motto: Another World is Possible. Another US is Necessary!

Kentucky Jobs with Justice is dedicated to protecting the rights of working people and supporting community struggles to build a more just society. KY JwJ accomplishes this goal by building a diverse coalition of labor, community, and religious groups that work together, mobilizing the strongest possible base of support for workers' social and economic rights.
