St. John Center's Raisin' the Rent Party

Friends, neighbors and strangers will come together on February 26th for the fifth annual Raisin’ the Rent party. Reminiscent of the days when friends hosted parties to raise money for rent, St. John Center helps men in housing each day.

Constructed in the 1920s when Harlem’s Rent Parties became famous, the historic Olmsted on Frankfort Avenue is this year’s venue for Raisin’ the Rent. The party benefits St. John Center for Homeless Men.

St. John Center continues the tradition as partygoers will be entertained with music by Louisville’s own Thumper and the Plaid Rabbits, hors d’oeuvres by Masterson’s Catering, dancing, live and silent auctions led by auctioneer Elizabeth Monarch, and games of chance. Local emcee Vicki Rogers from Lite 106.9 will lead guests through the night. A cash bar will also be available.

While event-planners predict a great time for party-goers, Vince Tyra, sponsorship chair of the event and Operating Partner at Southfield Capital, said there’s also a serious side to the theme. “The Depression-era motif is appropriate in these difficult economic times, as many of our neighbors struggle to make ends meet. Then, as now, people come together in response to a need in the community — helping others get by.”

“Raisin’ the Rent is the single largest fundraiser of the year for St. John Center,” said Jennifer Nickel, the agency’s director of marketing and communications. “It supplies more than 10 percent of our budget and is critical to our mission of providing hope and in some cases, housing, to homeless men.”

About St. John Center

St. John Center, 700 E Muhammad Ali Boulevard, is an emergency day shelter and social services hub. The center administers three complementary programs:

1. the day shelter and social services center,
2. a residential recovery program for those with drug and alcohol addictions, and
3. a permanent supportive housing program for the chronically homeless.

St. John Center serves nearly 200 homeless men every day.

St. John Center’s philosophy is that every man has value and dignity, and that every contribution to the center helps support its vital mission. That mission is to create an atmosphere that encourages homeless men to envision a life of hope, take shelter, and move forward by treating clients with respect and supporting them in addressing the problems that led them to homelessness.
