The Kentucky School of Art aspires to provide Louisville with a nationally known art college preparing students for a professional career in the visual arts through a rigorous curriculum.  KSA employees serving as part-time faculty at Spalding University teach courses focusing on media-specific degrees, contemporary art practices, community art programs, and offer students exposure and interaction with experienced art instructors and visiting artists, providing them with the structure and education necessary to flourish as artists while developing their own styles and talents.  

The vision for KSA is to become a college with art at its center:  all disciplines and studies will branch out from this core. Through the lens of art, students will study in the necessary courses to guide their individualized exploration, development, and the expression of their creative spirit. In addition, KSA will engage nationally recognized faculty and artists to nurture students’ creative practice through exposure to traditional and contemporary art practices.

Job Description

The development director of the Kentucky School of Art procures funds for KSA while promoting its mission and programs.  The development director will develop, and be responsible for implementation of, an organized effort and plan for fundraising for KSA including funding for all needs:  including, but not limited to, operations, scholarships and capital projects.  He or she will engage the board, staff and other volunteers in approaching potential donors, maintaining positive relationships with donors and thanking donors.

Finding Funding Sources

  • Focuses on locating sources of funding, approaching suitable funders and soliciting major donors for campaigns.
  • He or she also creates and administers fund-raising programs and spends a significant amount of time writing to and meeting with donors.

Communication

  • Maintains strong communication with the executive director, board of directors and donors via personal contacts and newsletters or other publications to demonstrate financial need and show the fiscal responsibility of the organization.

Budget

  • Creates fund-raising programs and activities while ensuring that the organization operates within the board-approved budget.
  • Adhering to a budget and focusing on meeting fund-raising goals are crucial components of this position.
  • Interface with the financial management team for KSA to ensure that all contributions are booked and managed legally and appropriately, and to provide support during the audit process

Supporting Organizational Goals

  • Play crucial role in the successes or failures of KSA.
  • Build upon and create key relationships to expand funding bases and to ensure that KSA’s programs and goals are realized.

Qualifications

  • Proven track record of raising funds through organized development efforts including some or all of the following: capital campaign, grants, events, individuals and/or corporations
  • Bachelor's degree in business, marketing, nonprofit management or other disciplines and significant experience in the nonprofit community. An applicant must understand the ins and outs of nonprofits, including legal fund-raising techniques.
  • Working knowledge of the use of computers and complex software applications, specifically those that are used in fundraising
  • 5 or more years in development
  • Relentless willingness to pursue funding and assistance from board members in creating and maintaining contacts
  • Experience in arts or education setting desirable, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute KSA’s annual fundraising plan
  • Manage the implementation of development software and oversee staff responsible for processing
  • Secure financial support from individuals, foundations and corporations
  • Interface with Development committee and Executive committee
  • Schedule and attend meetings
  • Maintain database of donors
  • Thank you letters - follow up, tax letters
  • Document donations and maintain schedule
  • Print and prepare fundraising materials and folders
  • Communicate with Board members about scheduling donor meetings
