The Gateway Project: Workforce Readiness and Online Career Exploration

A glaring issue in workforce readiness is that many individuals within the workforce do not have a clear understanding of what they want to be when they “grow up.”  Many people truly have not explored careers that are realistically attainable that also match their skills, interests and values.

There are many valuable on-line career exploration tools available to recent graduates, job-seekers, dislocated workers and the like.  Unfortunately, most of these individuals are unaware of the free resources that are at their fingertips and the knowledge attained from these resources could put them on a path to success.

The Department of Labor has moved to increase the awareness and volume of these resources.  Jewish Family and Career Services (JFCS) in Louisville is one ofnine participating affiliates of the International Association of Jewish Vocational Services who benefit from a portion of a $2.9 million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Labor.  This two-year grant, called The Gateway Project, will allow JFCS to work with service providers, as well as career changers, job seekers, individuals returning to the workforce, incumbent  healthcare workers and other consumers. The project will help participants learn how to most effectively access and use on-line career information.

This project has created The Gateway to Careers – Job Seeker’s Guide, which takes individuals through five sequential steps:

Ø      Assess Yourself: Skills, Interest and Work Values Assessments

Ø      Explore Careers: Occupational Outlook information on Careers

Ø      Create a Plan and Set Goals: Information on setting long and short-term career goals, creating a realistic career plan, and financial management

Ø      Expand Skills: Provides information on training/education resources, how to apply for financial aid, and how to keep advancing your career

Ø      Find a Job: Includes information such as resume writing, networking and interviewing tips as well as links to local job boards

Throughout the site there are exercises and information on areas such as soft skills, budgeting and crafting your elevator speech.

Additionally, later this year The Gateway to Careers – Job Seeker’s Guide will be linked to a Virtual Career Network with online career information focused on those with experience or interest in the healthcare sector. A workforce with access to this information provides employers with work-ready employees who truly enjoy what they do, which also serves as a valuable retention tool.
