The Parkinson Support Center of Kentuckiana (PSCKY) is seeking qualified applicants to fill the position of Outreach & Training Specialist. PSCKY is the only non-profit with the sole purpose of serving people with Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers, throughout Kentucky and Southern Indiana.
The Outreach and Training Specialist coordinates PSCKY’s Professional Caregiver Training program, and markets this multi-faceted training tool to home health companies, retirement and assisted living companies, and all other organizations that provide care giving for persons with PD. The goal is to maximize independence and provide superior, specialized care services for people with PD.
Working closely with the PSCKY staff team, the Outreach and Training Specialist is responsible for reaching diverse communities throughout the region, providing education to people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers. The goal here is to educate the public about PD, identify those with the disease, and improve access to care and quality of life.
The Outreach and Training Specialist will develop relationships with neurologists, general practitioners, rehab specialists and others to provide training for their staff and resources for their patients and families. This position reports to the Executive Director of PSCKY.
Duties and responsibilities:
Caregiver Training
1. Promote and conduct a sustained training program for paid caregivers in the healthcare, rehab and senior care industries.
2. Work with Executive Director to evaluate and maintain the cost structure and budget for program implementation.
3. Work with strategic partners to develop and maintain continuing education status for this program.
4. Conduct PD 101 training classes for individuals with PD and their personal/family caregivers.
5. Make sure current, timely information about caregiver training (i.e.—PD 101 classes) is updated in PSCKY publications and website on a regular basis.
Outreach
1. Identify and develop relationships with social institutions, civic clubs and community agencies working in targeted areas; schedule “community talks” with these organizations, where appropriate.
2. Coordinate the recruiting, training and maintenance of a Speaker’s Bureau of volunteers who can multiply our community outreach efforts.
3. Coordinate a volunteer Mentoring Program that provides timely one-on-one consultations for people with PD and their family members; provide educational materials and referrals to appropriate community resources for assistance.
4. Provide education to the public about signs/symptoms of PD. Evaluate and maintain current PD information, and make available to people with PD and their caregivers.
5. Help keep PD materials up to date, which are used as educational tools by healthcare/senior care professionals.
OTHER DUTIES
1. Evaluate the need for additional programs and services as defined by the relationships being built with service organizations, the medical community and those we strive to serve.
2. Actively participate as a representative of PSCKY via professional meetings and collaborative partnerships.
3. Provide a positive leadership role in the community and in all matters pertaining to the outreach and training efforts of PSCKY.
4. Work with volunteers when appropriate to assist with administrative needs, as presentation partners and other areas to be identified.
5. Advise Executive Director of policies and procedures that advance the mission and professionalism of PSCKY. Assist with the development of the agency budget, as it relates to training and outreach.
6. As a member of the PSCKY staff team, assist in the successful implementation of the annual Parkinson’s Symposium and Denim and Diamonds events.
Job Qualifications/Skills
1. Prior experience as a health educator or trainer. Pertinent background and experience, including providing support services to the aging, disabled or homebound.
2. Experience in developing health-related program models and tracking measurable outcomes
3. A working knowledge of Parkinson’s disease, and its effects on individuals and families; passionate about the care and well-being of persons with PD as well as for those who love and care for them.
4. Marketing experience, preferably in a health care setting
5. Experience in developing programming materials and classroom content
6. Proven community connections and an ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups of people
7. Excellent written and oral communication skills; strong interpersonal and relationship–building skills; experience in public speaking
8. Experience working with and supporting volunteers
9. Ability to use basic office computer programs
10. Strong attention to detail
11. Efficient time-management and strong self-supervision
12. Willingness to undertake training for professional development
13. Flexible schedule—some evenings, weekends and day travel required
14. Bachelor’s degree
Evaluation
Using pre-determined measurements, the Executive Director will conduct an annual review of this staff member. Self-review is an integral part of the process, and the Outreach and Training Specialist will be expected to contribute to the review, and help determine future goals.
