Job Announcement: Executive Director, Blackacre Conservancy rss feed

Blackacre Conservancy Overview:  Blackacre Nature Preserve and Historic Homestead was founded in 1979 with a gift of 170 acres of farmland, fields, and woodlands from Judge Macauley and Emilie Strong Smith to the Kentucky State Nature Preserve Commission.  The Smiths wished to preserve the land from growing development and wanted future generations to experience a farm and observe nature.  In 1997 an additional 101 acres were added to Blackacre’s southern boundary through a gift from Emilie Smith, her son and her grandsons and in 2007 a seventeen acre easement was purchased to the north of the original preserve.  The historic homestead, founded in the late 1700's by the Tyler family, includes a 1795 double crib Appalachian style barn, a 1795 Spring House and Stone Cottage, and an 1844 Federal style farmhouse.  Additional buildings include a weaving shed, Nature Center, and replica of a smoke house.  Today, Blackacre is one of Kentucky’s preeminent sites for outdoor environmental education and is open to the public for programs, activities and informal use.

Blackacre’s mission is to preserve Blackacre's natural and historic features, promote outdoor environmental education, and share Blackacre's cultural heritage with the community.

Executive Director Position Description:

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director (ED) shall have general charge of the business and supervision of the affairs of the Blackacre Conservancy.  Specifically, the ED will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for the Conservancy’s staff, fund development, programs, partnerships, and execution of its mission.

Most nonprofit ED positions require the ED to “wear many hats.” The ED position at the Conservancy is no different.  The organization’s small size and broad focus on Environmental Education, Land Conservation, and Historic Preservation means the ED must be comfortable managing multiple projects simultaneously and relying on experts in fields they may not be familiar with.  The Conservancy is committed to finding a candidate with strong management and fundraising experience who exhibits strong interpersonal skills as well.  Demonstrated educational, land management, and/or historic preservation experience is a plus, but not required.
