Family Scholar House Announces Activities and Events for Mayor’s Give a Day – Week of Service

Louisville, Ky. (April 11, 2017) -- Family Scholar House has announced the activities and events they will be hosting and participating in as a part of the Mayor’s Give a Day – Week of Service from April 15-23.

Café Night Compassion

Monday – Wednesday, April 17-19, 5-6:30 p.m.

Family Scholar House is proud to be a Compassionate Agency. We took the charter as an agency and encourage our families to look for ways they can be more compassionate every single day. Our youngest scholars will take an oath to be compassionate as well, through our Children Charter. Instead of a signature, they will provide a hand print as a sign of support. The workshop will discuss what it means to be compassionate and how we can be more compassionate every day. Café Night Compassion will take place during the following dates and times:

  • Monday – Downtown Scholar House – 118 W. Breckenridge, Louisville, Ky. 40203
  • Tuesday – Parkland Scholar House – 1309 Catalpa St., Louisville, Ky. 40211
  • Wednesday – Louisville Scholar House – 403 Reg Smith Circle, Louisville, Ky. 40208
  • Family Scholar House Campus Tours
  • Monday-Thursday, April 17-20, 9:30 – 11 a.m.

Interested in Family Scholar House and learning more about what we do? Come down for a tour of our main campus located at 403 Reg Smith Circle and volunteer while visiting or register to volunteer for projects down the road. We will be providing a tour of the campus, an overview of the programs/services and completing eggfirmations (affirmations inside of plastic eggs) for our scholars.

Book Drive

Monday-Saturday, April 17-22, 5-7 p.m.

Family Scholar House will be collecting new or gently used books for our youngest scholars. These books are used to restock our libraries on campus as well as provide our children with the books to build their very own library at home. These books are primarily for elementary school-aged children or younger. Donors can drop off books at the Family Scholar House Campus located at 403 Reg Smith Circle anytime between 9:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. If you donate between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m., you can also take part in a campus tour to learn more about Family Scholar House.

About Family Scholar House:

Family Scholar House is changing lives, families and communities through education. Our mission is to end the cycle of poverty and transform our community by empowering families and youth to succeed in education and achieve life-long self-sufficiency. All of these families are low-income and have experienced homelessness or unstable housing. FSH parent scholars are full-time college students, pursing post-secondary education, while being full time parents. The single parent students of Family Scholar House are working day in and day out to achieve their goals, ultimately gain self-sufficiency and provide a better life for themselves and their children. About Mayor’s Give a Day – Week of Service

When Mayor Greg Fischer took office in 2011, he set three goals for Louisville – pillars of community life. He said we must become a city of lifelong learning; a healthier city; and a city of even greater compassion. The Mayor’s Give a Day week of service is the signature piece of the compassion goal. Each spring, volunteers span across Louisville to commit selfless acts of compassion. Neighbors clean up streets and parks, collect goods for people in need and repair homes. They read to students, mentor, assemble care packages and much more. Though these good deeds happen in Louisville all through the year, Give a Day puts the needs and the benefits into stark focus, lifting citizens in need and setting a lasting tone of compassion for the entire city.
