I. Introduction to Nonprofit Boards: Board Basics & Finding Your Passion
April 24, 2008 from 8:30 a.m. to Noon
Begin your quest to serve greater Louisville through volunteer leadership as a board member! In this first of the four-session Get on Board series, you will learn about the scope and nature of nonprofit organizations, what to expect serving on a board of directors and the importance of linking your passion to your volunteer experience. We’ll address the concept of boards as high-functioning teams that perform best when they display trust, embrace diversity, and have clear roles and responsibilities.
II. Stewards of Public Trust
May 8, 2008 from 8:30 a.m. to Noon
When you join a nonprofit board, the community trusts that you will guide the organization toward accomplishing its mission objectives. In this session, you’ll learn about the roles to be filled and behaviors you and your fellow board members must exhibit to make that happen. We will define boundaries between board governance and management, and explore the fiduciary responsibilities of board membership.
III. Visionary Leadership
May 15, 2008 from 8:30 a.m. to Noon
A high-performance nonprofit board envisions and helps the nonprofit create a bold, successful future – with a commitment from the board to values, a spirit of optimism, and a pledge to meet the changing demands of the community the organization serves. In this session, you’ll learn what methods work best to achieve this level of board performance. This session culminates in a reception where each table is hosted by a leader from nonprofit organizations seeking qualified board members.
IV. Promises to Keep
May 22, 2008 from 8:30 a.m. to Noon
A board member’s pledge to lead and serve finds its meaning not only in the domain of strategy and fiscal oversight, but also within the traditions of a legal agreement with the community, the board and all other stakeholders. At our final session, we’ll review the obligations implicit in responsible board governance and celebrate your successful completion of this learning experience.
