Two-part series: Friday, January 28, and Wednesday, February 2, 2011
Our world has never been more interconnected and interdependent. We are immersed in change that seems like it will bury us.
In order to understand and function successfully, we need to deal with high levels of complexity, and situations loaded with abstraction, diversity, ambiguity and paradox. For most of us, our familiar models do not equip us for this challenge.
When the levels of chaos/complexity in the issues we are working with are high, it becomes critical for us to be able to use models that offer new possibilities to:
• succeed in new contexts,
• make learning an integral activity, and
• achieve new results.
This course provides participants an opportunity to learn new models of change for looking at how chaos and change are affecting their work, and apply learning to a problem, situation or issue they bring.
Part I: Reading the New Map
Before we can function in better ways in conditions of chaos, we have to understand how chaos works. This section explains how working in chaos is different from working in other conditions.
1. How interconnectedness, speed of change and extended time horizons have changed the world.
2. Chaos = complexity: Understanding the types of complexity.
3. Balancing chaos and order: walking the chaordic (chaos + order) path.
4. The laws of nature in the world of complexity.
Part II: Taking the Journey
To successfully navigate the chaos in our work, we need new tools and skills. This section offers participants the opportunity to begin to apply the knowledge from part I.
1. Mapping the uncertainty and disagreement in your chaos.
2. Technical and adaptive problems: one kind we solve, one kind solves us.
3. Working with immunity to change.
4. Making decisions in chaos.
5. Taking advantage of more possibilities and fewer certainties.

Getting to the Center for Nonprofit Excellence (CNPE) is easy. We are located on the south side of downtown Louisville, KY in the restored ArtSpace building located at 323 West Broadway. You may enter ArtSpace just left of the Brown Theatre marquee. Signage will direct you to the training classroom location. CNPE encourages all its visitors to access public transit as there are several convenient TARC bus routes within a short walk of our location. To find the TARC ride nearest you visit, www.ridetarc.org.
Are you a cycling guest? Bring your bicycle to the fifth floor for storage during your visit.
Should you drive to our location, there is ample parking within a two block radius including structures, surface lots and metered spaces. Due to the economic realities we all face, the Center for Nonprofit Excellence will be unable to validate parking. While we regret this financial necessity, we need to expend all of our resources where they matter most -- toward the highest level of quality services possible.
