When marketing and fundraising work together effectively, donors receive consistent, compelling messages that build trust and understanding. This trust encourages deeper involvement and support for your cause, even during times of crisis. You will learn to use marketing as a strategic management tool for fundraising, including creating print, digital, and event-based strategies to meet specific goals, communicating messages to media outlets effectively, and measuring organizational needs and effectiveness.
The class is three days in length.

Margaret M. (Marnie) Maxwell
As a nonprofit management consultant, Marnie Maxwell works with nonprofit organizations and boards in the areas of strategic planning, governance, marketing and fund development planning. Higher education, arts programs, museums, libraries and youth programs are the primary focus areas of her consulting practice, although Maxwell Associates has also worked with a variety of other nonprofit organizations. Marnie also has been a faculty member of The Fund Raising School at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy since 1990, training nonprofit executives throughout the world.
Prior to her work as a consultant, she was Vice President for The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, one of the nation’s premier cultural institutions. Her museum experience includes leadership roles in fundraising, marketing, strategic planning and earned income programs.
Marnie’s current volunteer work includes serving as board chair of the Metropolitan Indianapolis Public Broadcasting Foundation and as immediate past chair of the Indianapolis Art Center board. She also serves on the Mission Advisory Board for the Sisters of Providence, St. Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana. Marnie formerly chaired the boards of Girls, Inc. and the Marion County Commission on Youth. She is a Sustaining Member of the Junior League of Indianapolis and has chaired fundraising events for the Eiteljorg Museum and the Heartland Film Festival.
She received both a B.A. in journalism and an MBA in marketing from Indiana University. She is a frequent speaker about nonprofit governance and management practices and has written extensively on topics related to the nonprofit sector. Recent publications include “Selecting and Working with Fundraising Consultants,” a chapter in Achieving Excellence in Fundraising (3rd edition), published by Jossey Bass; and “Transition: Key Phases in Children’s Museum Board Evolutions,” published by the Association of Children’s Museums in Hand to Hand.
Nathan Hand is a professional fundraiser and nonprofit blogger who enjoys connecting people with the causes that need them. He has helped countless local, national and international organizations build awareness and raise funds.
He serves as Director of Advancement at The Oaks Academy in Indianapolis, Faculty at The Fund Raising School at Indiana University, is President of the Association of Fundraising Professionals in Indiana, serves on the board of several nonprofit organizations and presents regularly on a variety of topics including fundraising, social media, nonprofit marketing, leadership and more.
Nathan has a masters in Philanthropic Studies from the School of Philanthropy at Indiana University, an Executive Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Georgetown University and did his undergraduate work at DePauw University.
